Box Spring and Mattresses
The foundation or base of your bed - often called a box spring - is important. The box spring does much of the work for the mattress by absorbing stress and weight.
The correct foundation can extend the life of the mattress, therefore you should try to purchase the box spring designed to go with your mattress. Using no foundation, old foundations or mixing mattresses and box springs can negatively affect the level of support and the durability of your mattress.
Do I need to buy a box spring?
Many consumers buy an expensive mattress of excellent quality but totally ignore what foundation it will rest on. This oversight will degrade the comfort of your mattress - even a top rated mattress from one of the brand leaders. Often times, a buyer tests how comfortable a mattress feels in the store, finds it fantastic, orders it, gets delivery only to be disappointed that it doesn't feel as comfortable as it did in the store. This is usually because the customer didn't order the manufacturer's box spring for the mattress. The top mattress manufacturer's specifically make their mattresses to be supported by their box spring foundations. Also, resting a mattress on top of a box spring foundation will allow your mattress to get proper ventilation, thereby reducing the build up of unpleasant odors. You should also know that a foundation absorbs up to half of the sleep set's total wear, and they wear out at the same rate as the mattress. So if your mattress shows signs of sag, chances are that your box spring needs replacing too.
When shopping for a mattress and matching box spring foundation, you should make sure that you have enough room to get it into your bedroom. Getting a king size mattress usually isn't a problem; even a 10" thick mattress can be maneuvered to squeeze through narrow passageways and doorways. However, the same can't be said for the box spring foundation. So, if you're thinking of buying a king size mattress box spring combination, get out your tape measure and check that your have enough room. If in doubt ask advice from your mattress retailer.
The best way to get the most out of your day is to get the most out of your sleep. Choosing the correct mattress and box spring combination will help to ensure that you get the best possible night's sleep.
